I want to start Kayaking, but what equipment do I need? This is a question we at EdgeRiders have been asked many times. So we have compiled this starter kit list to help you on your way.

Lets assume that you already have your kayak and paddle such as the Ocean Kayak Frenzy sit top (If not we can help there too with some great options on Ocean Kayak Kayak's and paddles).

The first thing we will focus on is safety:

Buoyancy Aid

Gul Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid We recommend something like the Gul Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid. The Gul Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid Crosses over for many watersports - designed to sit just above the bottom of the ribcage it allows the flexibility required for a number of activities and works well when in a seated position; such as when you are in a kayak.

The Foam is made from a  lightweight PVC and the the Gul Garda 50N Buoyancy Aid is  CE EN393 approved. Featuring 2-way waist adjustment for a personalized fit made from Durable Rip-Stop CE approved nylon. this buoyancy add comes in all sizes including sizes for youth/juniors.

    Helmet

For the helmet we have chosen the Mystic MK8 Helmet as a great starter option, like the buoyancy aid this helmet will cross over for may other watersports. It is CE approved: CE EN 1385 and made from a high impact thermo plastic. Note that this helmet is for watersports only.

Shoes or Booties

A pair of neoprene shoes or booties is an essential when lugging your kayak over rough ground to the waters edge. Which boots or shoes you decide to go with can be down to personal preference but for the purpose of this blog we have selected the O'Neill Superfreak Tropical Round Toe 2mm Neoprene Shoe.

The O'Neill boot line reflects the expertly designed features and attention to detail you have to come expect from O’Neill. Drawstring Cinch, Torsion Control Forefoot Strap, Round Toe, Fluid Foam and a Durable Textured Rubber Sole for giving your feed great protection when launching and landing.

When the temperatures drop you might want to also consider the following items:

    Wetsuit

O'Neill HAMMER 3/2 FULL Wetsuit BLK/GRAPH/NEONRED 2016 Again choice of wetsuit is down to fit and personal preference but also the style and thickness also come into it. A great value suit for a starter setup is the O'neill Epic wetsuit. This suit comes in Men's, Women's and Youth options and in a variety of thicknesses and sizes.

They are made from a 100% Super stretch Neoprene so tend to be a great fit and a good priced option.

 Spray Top

The Gul Gamma Taped Spray Top is an ideal multi purpose top; designed to minimize wind chill. It benefits from a hardwearing advanced GCX2 two-layer fabric which has been specifically engineered to prevent water penetration, at the same time offering breathability, allowing perspiration moisture to evaporate thus keeping the user warmer. The Gammer top has a waterproof and breathability rating of 5000mm and 5000g/m/24h.

Fully taped it provides all-weather protection whilst still remaining breathable. The adjustable collar, waistband and wrist water seals reduce flush. The Gamma allows you to gain the most from your watersports experience, allowing you to perform at your best for longer.

   Gloves

The Dakine full finger sailing gloves offer comfort and great grip, these are ideal for use in warmer conditions. In the depths of winter however you might want to go for a thicker neoprene glove like the Mystic Jackson semi dry glove this is made from a 3mm thick neoprene and has a semi dry seal to stop any cold water getting in.

   Wet Bag

Gul 40 Litre Dry bag The  Gul dry bag has a sturdy construction in a cylindrical shape. The viewing panel and tough waterproof materials make it ideal for a multiple of water sport uses, whether your storing your soaking wetsuit or protecting your dry clothes for later. Snap shut dry fastenings allow the bag to be opened and closed watertight with ease.

Your drybag has been made from carefully selected materials to give the best combination of durability and performance. With the correct care you will gain the maximum life from your drybag. Always rinse your drybag after use in clean water using a mild detergent if necessary. Please don’t use any solvents or other chemicals to remove stains or marks from your drybag as this can cause damage. Protect your drybag from sharp or abrasive objects

Kayak Trolley

A Kayak trolly is a must have if you need to transport your kayak any distance, The C-TUG kayak trolley is designed and manufactured in Napier, New Zealand. now sold by Edgeriders.com in the UK. Unlike any other trolley in the paddle sport arena today, C-TUG continues to amaze sport enthusiasts with its rugged appeal, incredible strength and satisfying good looks. With yet another design improvement, the puncture-free wheels now have hi-grip rubber tread.

Soft roof rack

And for your roof rack you can't beat a Dakine Roof rack pad to protect your car and kayak
